Trail of Red

These machine lace pieces are a continuation of the meandering from my ink and water video, but also take inspiration from the wonderful, cracks and lines, in Block III with artists Denise Kehoe and Sarah Misselbrook.

The samples are a more symbolic, exploration of blood using a vibrant red thread.  The work could be made more gelatinous and blood-like through the use of latex or acrylic gels.

Not sure if your aware but, there’s an Indian film that is being released called Padman which, tells the true story of a guy in India who fought against taboos to create a way for women to make their own sanitary towels in remote rural areas. India is an extremely patriarchal society and issues of women’s health are pushed into the background so you can imagine the uproar around this film.

There’s also the poet Rupi Kaur who’s instagram posts where taken down for advocating free-bleeding and musician Madame Ghandi who ran the London marathon in 2015 whilst free-bleeding.

All of these people dissented by ‘just being’. There very presence was a threat to the norm. You’ve created some very insightful observations and I look forward to where it takes you

Hi Ash
Many thanks for all the info, I will investigate further - the film sounds really interesting

While there are still some social unease in this country - the taboos are far greater in countries such as Africa and India. I used to volunteer at Plan International (https://plan-international.org/sexual-health/menstrual-hygiene-management), who ran several projects working to build the confidence of girls and combat the social stigma.

Best wishes

I regularly host artists, musicians and volunteers here on the farm and often women ask for emergency supplies, until they can get to the supermarket. Having recently discovered 'Hey Girls', I now have a supply in stock here of these sanitary products, knowing that for every purchase a box is sent out to a woman who is in period poverty.

Hi Sarah
Thanks also for the link, it looks a great website and project. I really like the way they are working to normalise periods and sanitary towels.

Best wishes
Rosina
